20/7/2017 0 Comments To the bone.-my thoughts.to the bone. A Netflix film displaying the journey of Ellen a 20 year old girl who had been battling anorexia nervosa for some time. A controversial topic, here are my thoughts. ♡ My thoughts on Netflix's film 'To the bone' are mixed. I feel it's great that as a society we are more free and open to talk about mental health issues - such as anorexia. I feel the film was a great way of raising awareness about what it's like to live with an eating disorder and how totally life consuming it is. I also think it was great how they showed what if felt like from the families perspective and what pain it caused them too. When you're so deep in your own thoughts you forget that your actions effect others too. However what I find really hard to accept is how much weight lily had to loose to play the role. Not only is that putting herself under extreme pressure mentally and physically, considering she has suffered before, but it is just reiterating that you must look a certain way to have an eating disorder, which is completely not true. You could have exactly the same thoughts and feelings as Ellen did at any weight. You do not need to loose weight to be deserving of treatment. There is no 'sick enough.' Equally there were some rather triggering parts - especially visuals - but then again I feel like you would only be effected by them if you yourself suffer from an eating disorder. It's hard to judge how it will effect people , as it's shown what misery Ellen is living through - in her pursuit for 'perfection' yet I still feel it is very a risky step to take. I'm not sure how to feel. It provides a lot of insight into the disease but could it have been done in a way that wasn't so focused on Ellen's thinness? Remember you do not have to look a certain way to 'qualify' to have an eating disorder or deserve treatment. I think the whole relationship thing was a little predictable and a Little unrealistic. "Patient contact" is a thing! Finding love isn't a magic cure. Ellen didn't need Luke to make her realise she needed to get well. It has to come from within. You have to want it for yourself. It would have been nice to see her getting better too instead of ending where it did. Sometimes wanting to recover and actually doing it are not always as close as you would hope. But overall Hopefully the film will have given people more of an insight into what it's like to live with the illness and how it's very much not a choice, yet there is a way out of all this pain. ♡ ive linked below some helpful websites for anyone who needs them ❀ https://www.b-eat.co.uk/ https://www.mind.org.uk/ http://www.anorexiabulimiacare.org.uk/ http://mengetedstoo.co.uk/ https://youngminds.org.uk/ Zoë x
